Convenience Stores: A 24-Hour Lifeline

A guide to Korea's 24-hour convenience stores — what to eat, how to use them, and the other services they offer.

What is a convenience store?

Korea's convenience stores — CU, GS25, 7-Eleven, and Emart24 — are open 24 hours and are everywhere. They sell ready meals, snacks, drinks, and daily necessities, and they are one of the best places to eat cheaply and well in Korea. Many visitors are surprised by how good the food is.

What to try

Try the triangle kimbap (samgak gimbap), a rice triangle wrapped in seaweed with a filling such as tuna or bulgogi. Convenience store lunch boxes (dosirak) are filling and cost a few thousand won. Instant noodles, egg sandwiches, and the store's own coffee are all popular choices.

Heating your food

Most stores have a microwave you can use for free — the staff will usually heat your meal for you if you ask. There is also hot water for instant noodles and a seating area in many stores. Eating inside the store is normal and expected.

Other useful services

Convenience stores also sell T-money cards and top-ups, SIM cards, and basic toiletries. You can use the ATM inside many stores, and some stores offer parcel pickup and delivery services. If you need anything late at night, the convenience store is almost always the answer.

Paying

Cards are accepted at all convenience stores, and you can also pay with your T-money card. Prices are fixed and clearly marked, so there is no bargaining. Keep your receipt if you want to return or exchange an item.
