Shopping and Tax Refunds

How to get a tax refund on your shopping in Korea — instant refunds, airport refunds, and what to keep.

What is tax refund shopping?

Foreign visitors can get a refund of the VAT (value added tax) on purchases made in Korea. The refund is usually around 8 percent of the purchase price, depending on the amount spent. You must spend a minimum amount in a single shop — usually 15,000 won or more — to qualify.

How to get an instant refund

At many shops, you can get an instant tax refund at the till: show your passport, and the shop will deduct the tax from the price you pay. This is the easiest option, because you do not need to do anything at the airport. Look for shops with a 'Tax Free' sign.

How to get a refund at the airport

If the shop does not offer an instant refund, ask for a tax refund receipt and keep it. At the airport, go to the tax refund counter or the self-service kiosk before check-in, show your passport and receipts, and the refund will be paid to your card or in cash. Allow extra time at the airport for this.

What to keep

Keep your passport, your receipts, and the goods you bought. Customs may ask to see the goods before they approve the refund, so do not pack them in checked luggage until after the refund is processed. Keep all receipts in one place during your trip.

Where to shop tax free

Department stores, large shopping malls, and many shops in Myeongdong, Hongdae, and Dongdaemun offer tax-free shopping. Convenience stores and small markets usually do not. If you plan a big shopping trip, ask the shop before you buy whether they offer tax refunds.
